French Inspired Dresser

Prima Tansfer
skill level

Furniture design is one of my favorite things to do. These French inspired dressers where so fun to re-design. I like to try and take current styles along with the style of the pieces. So these dresser I wanted to keep some what simple. Yet I wanted to put some of my own pazzas into them.

The Design

First off keeping it wood is classic so I kept the wood but went with the natural color of the wood. The raw wood colors are very popular right now. Here is one way to create the raw wood look. I like to try to keep with they style of the piece so I went with a Re-Design transfer. They rotate their designs so often that you won’t see much of the same but here is what they have now.

The Restoration

The top was completely delaminating so it needed to be re-glued, then I scraped the finish on the flat surfaces with my carbide scraper. I have curved scrapers for the curved section you can get those here. Sometimes it depend on the piece of furniture whether or not I scrape or use a chemical stripper. But I NEVER use a sander to remove a finish.

Staining this was easy just made a tan stain. Which is a beige and white paint watered down to make a stain. I will do a blog on this soon.

Some Special Touches

To keep with the French inspired dresser I choose this Prima furniture transfer for the sides I wanted a little pop but nothing that would impede from the piece itself.

There was a ciggarette burn on the top I could not get out! So I used Mohwaks Blendal Sticks to conceal that mark. Here are the Blendal Sticks.

I kept the original hardware but there were a couple missing so I had the top two drawer have knobs that matched the style and period. And faite this French inspired dresser is done!

I love this! Why don’t you ever sand the finish off? Thank you for sharing.

      Hey Cheryl,
Thanks for asking. You can very easily sand through veneer or change the profile of wood when sanding. Chemical strippers are very efficient to remove a finish. Sometimes I might use a carbon scraper as well but that too you need to be very careful that you don’t scratch the wood.
